Great talk tonight for WPO @ the St. Regis. John Hamm was so on target as to why businesses scale or not. Are you an entrepreneur or leader?

Get Amped & Execute

Read this great blog post from Outspoken Media. Are you the person she's talking to? I might be. Subscribe to her blog. She always has something interesting to say. Enjoy. J.

It's Your Time. Get Amped & Execute Posted: 07 Apr 2010 07:45 AM PDT

We all talk a bit too much. We talk about the work we have to do, the new things we want to try when we get the time, the obstacles in our way. Sometimes the talk is helpful. It helps us to prioritize and plan and gets things in line so we can execute. But at some point we talk so we don't have to act. We talk so we have something to do when we're not doing the things we're supposed to be doing. We talk as an excuse for inaction. Let's not do that today. Today you should get amped and start executing. Nail down that one thing you've been wanting to do, and go all Nike on it. This is your time. Your competitor's time is over. If you don't believe me, let 5-year-old Joshua Sacco remind you.  He helped the Red Sox earn a 9-7 comeback win from the Yankees on Sunday night. Or if that didn't light a fire under your ass, go read Rae's post on Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda Success. Or maybe watch Gary V's video on why he's gonna spend this year reading, instead of talking and speaking. Imagine what you'd be doing right now if you executed this time last year and didn't just talk about it.  You probably wouldn't be reading this blog post. I'm okay with that. We weren't all born to be baseball players, but that doesn't mean we can't create great things. If you're not the one on your team who has trouble executing, send this to the person who does.

Random rules for ideas worth spreading

If you've got an idea worth spreading, I hope you'll consider this random assortment of rules. Like all rules, some are made to be broken, but still...

  • You can name your idea anything you like, but a google-friendly name is always better than one that isn't.
  • Don't plan on appearing on a reality show as the best way to launch your idea.
  • Waiting for inspiration is another way of saying that you're stalling. You don't wait for inspiration, you command it to appear.
  • Don't poll your friends. It's your art, not an election.
  • Never pay a non-lawyer who promises to get you a patent.
  • Avoid powerful people. Great ideas aren't anointed, they spread through a groundswell of support.
  • Spamming strangers doesn't work. Spamming friends doesn't work so well either, but it's certainly better than spamming strangers.
  • The hard part is finishing, so enjoy the starting part.
  • Powerful organizations adore the status quo, so expect no help from them if your idea challenges the very thing they adore.
  • Figure out how long your idea will take to spread, and multiply by 4.
  • Be prepared for the Dip.
  • Seek out apostles, not partners. People who benefit from spreading your idea, not people who need to own it.
  • Keep your overhead low and don't quit your day job until your idea can absorb your time.
  • Think big. Bigger than that.
  • Are you a serial idea-starting person? If so, what can you change to end that cycle? The goal is to be an idea-shipping person.
  • Try not to confuse confidence with delusion.
  • Prefer dry, useful but dull ideas to consumer-friendly 'I would buy that' sort of things. A lot less competition and a lot more upside in the long run.
  • Pick a budget. Pick a ship date. Honor both. Don't ignore either. No slippage, no overruns.
  • Surround yourself with encouraging voices and incisive critics. It's okay if they're not the same people. Ignore both camps on occasion.
  • Be grateful.
  • Rise up to the opportunity, and do the idea justice.

The lesson from two lemonade stands

The first stand is run by two kids. They use Countrytime lemonade, paper cups and a bridge table. It's a decent lemonade stand, one in the long tradition of standard lemonade stands. It costs a dollar to buy a cup, which is a pretty good price, considering you get both the lemonade and the satisfaction of knowing you supported two kids.

The other stand is different. The lemonade is free, but there's a big tip jar. When you pull up, the owner of the stand beams as only a proud eleven year old girl can beam. She takes her time and reaches into a pail filled with ice and lemons. She pulls out a lemon. Slices it. Then she squeezes it with a clever little hand juicer.

The whole time that's she's squeezing, she's also talking to you, sharing her insights (and yes, her joy) about the power of lemonade to change your day. It's a beautiful day and she's in no real hurry. Lemonade doesn't hurry, she says. It gets made the right way or not at all. Then she urges you to take a bit less sugar, because it tastes better that way.

While you're talking, a dozen people who might have become customers drive on by because it appears to take too long. You don't mind, though, because you're engaged, almost entranced. A few people pull over and wait in line behind you.

Finally, once she's done, you put $5 in the jar, because your free lemonade was worth at least twice that. Well, maybe the lemonade itself was worth $3, but you'd happily pay again for the transaction. It touched you. In fact, it changed you.

Which entrepreneur do you think has a brighter future?

Reflections of 2009 and Hopes for 2010

A very wonderful and smart friend of mine, Elizabeth Becker of Becker Communications, suggested that a group of us find symbols that reflect the previous year and the year ahead.

I chose "White Out" to reflect my desire to correct most of 2009! Last year was a lesson in patience, resilience and letting go. The fact that the title has my last name makes it all the more fitting. 2009, good riddance!

For 2010, I am choosing a bottle of water from the Four Season Las Vegas. This symbol represents easy flowing fun and abundance. I like this!

So...what are your 2 representations? Send me your pics!

Wishing you all easy flowing fun and abundance too in 2010! J.

Seth is great again today... "

Is it too late to catch up? What if your organization or your client has done nothing? What if they've just watched the last fourteen years go by? No real website, no social media, no permission assets. What if now they're ready and they ask your advice? And, by the way, they have no real cash to spend...Here's a list of my top ten things to consider doing:

• Use gmail to give every person in the organization that can read English an email address.
• Use a free website creating tool or even Squidoo to build a page about your company. Nothing fancy, but list your locations, your people (with addresses) and make it clear you want to hear from people.
• Start an email newsletter using Mad Mimi or Mail Chimp. Give the responsibility for the newsletter's creation and performance to one person and offer them a bonus if they exceed metrics in sign ups and in reducing churn.
• Start a book group for your top executives and every person who answers the phone, designs a product or interacts with customers. Read a great online media book a week and discuss. It'll take you about a year to catch up.
• Offer a small bonus to anyone in the company who starts and runs a blog on any topic. Have them link to your company site, with an explanation that while they work there, they don't speak for you.• Have the president post her (real) email address in every invoice and other communication the company sends out, asking people to write to her with comments or questions.
• Start a newsletter for your vendors. Email them regular updates about what you're doing, what's selling and what problems are going on internally that they might be able to help you with.• Do not approve any project that isn't run on Basecamp.
• Get a white board and put it in the break room. On it, have someone update: how many people subscribe to the newsletter, how many people visit the website, how many inbound requests come in by phone, how long it takes customer service to answer an email and how often your brand names are showing up on Twitter every day.
• Don't have any meetings about your web strategy. Just do stuff. First you have to fail, then you can improve.
• Refuse to cede the work to consultants. You don't outsource your drill press or your bookkeeping or your product design. If you're going to catch up, you must (all of you) get good at this, and you only accomplish that by doing it.

The problem is no longer budget. The problem is no longer access to tools. The problem is the will to get good at it.

Stress-Free Relationship Building by Keith Ferrazzi

Top 10 Personal Rituals for Stress-Free Relationship Building
Posted on December 1st, 2009 by Keith Ferrazzi

In a recent post on time management, I asked for your favorite rituals for stress-free relationship building. They were all great! Here are my ten favorites:

10. Dog walking. That's prime pinging time for me, working from a home office. The dog doesn't mind. - John Kerr

9. Network at the gym. - Elizabeth Rhody

8. Every 3-4 months, organize informal drinks as a way to connect with people - but in a very time efficient manner. You buy appetizers, everyone buys their own drinks. - Sital

7. Split your lunch hour in two: Eat with one person and go for a walk with another. It gets in a little extra exercise and many people are happy to move around in the middle of the day. - Alizabeth Van Wieren

6. Make time to pray, worship, and listen to music often to help keep yourself energized. - Evie Denis

5. Create a blog to use as a reference library. In that blog I collect links and articles that I want to save for future reference. I also share the blog content with other artists. Not having to dig for links saves a lot of time. - Marie Kazalia

4. Give up TV! - Maria

3. Identify one "most important task" each day, and then devote the first hour of the day to that task -- before checking email or doing anything else. - Matt Perman

2. Sports junkies: use TV game time to follow up on e-mails, and schedule calls/mtgs with people. - SCOR

1. Get to appointments at least 15 minutes early and use those minutes for pinging, returning emails and social media. You can get a lot done with focus! - Juli Monroe

TGIF from "Fabulous" Seth

"Fabulous
This is so cool: because we only look at things we want to look at, only talk about things worth talking about, the amount of fabulous in the world continues to rise exponentially.

Even though we're at the tail end of the great recession, think about all the cool stuff in your life. Not just stuff you can buy, but experiences, works of art, innovations of all kinds... the bar has been raised for what you need to do to be noticed, and the market is responding.

Not only do I notice more fabulous, but it sure seems as though the creators of it are more engaged, dedicated and yes, joyful, than I can remember. If there was ever a moment to follow your passion and do work that matters, this is it. You can't say, "but I need to make a fortune instead," because that's not happening right now. So you might as well join the people who can say, "I love doing this." -Seth Godin"

Exit Your Business When You Start Your Business

I was booked to speak to a start up group of women today but it was cancelled because several attendees were sick. The title of my presentation is "How to Exit Your Business When You Start Your Business".  Like it? Mark Victor Hansen actually named it for me... jgw

P.S. The presentation is perfect for start-ups as it gets them thinking about preparing for an exit from day one. Let me know if your group is interested in hearing the key note or workshop version.
